Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Shabtai Teveth (born 1925 – died November 1, 2014) was an Israeli historian and writer. He was known for his detailed research and books about important events and leaders in Israeli history.

Early Life and Career

Shabtai Teveth was born in 1925. He grew up near Petah Tikva, close to a place called Migdal Tzedek, where his father worked in a stone quarry.

In 1950, Teveth began working as a journalist for the newspaper Haaretz. He eventually became the newspaper's main political reporter, covering important news about government and politics. Later, in 1981, he became a senior researcher at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies at Tel Aviv University. This role allowed him to focus more on historical research.

Important Historical Research

Shabtai Teveth wrote many books and articles about Israeli history. One of his important research projects was about the murder of Haim Arlosoroff in 1982. Arlosoroff was a well-known Zionist leader. Teveth's research led to a special government investigation, which looked into his findings.

Teveth also wrote a very detailed biography of David Ben-Gurion, who was Israel's first Prime Minister. In this biography, Teveth argued that Ben-Gurion did not support a policy of moving large groups of people from their homes. This was an important point in understanding Ben-Gurion's actions and beliefs.
