He became a scout for the United States Cavalry. A scout is someone who explores and gathers information. In this role, he helped the soldiers find other Modoc warriors who were still fighting.
Later Life and Legacy
Shacknasty Jim later died in 1881. He passed away from a serious illness called tuberculosis while at the Quapaw Indian Agency.
