Shade balls are small, dark plastic balls that float on top of large amounts of water, like in a reservoir. People use them to help protect the environment. They stop water from disappearing into the air (this is called evaporation). They also help prevent sunlight from causing bad reactions with chemicals in the water. These balls are sometimes called bird balls because they were first made to stop birds from landing on the water.

Why Do We Use Shade Balls?

Shade balls have a few important jobs. One main reason is to save water. When the sun shines on a large reservoir, a lot of water can turn into vapor and go into the air. This is called evaporation. The shade balls cover the water's surface, blocking the sun and greatly reducing how much water evaporates. This is very helpful in places where water is scarce.

Another reason is to keep the water clean and safe. Sunlight can cause certain chemicals in the water to react and create harmful byproducts. For example, chlorine, which is used to clean water, can react with sunlight to form unwanted substances. The shade balls block the sun's rays, helping to keep the water quality better. They also help prevent algae from growing too much, as algae need sunlight to thrive.

How Do Shade Balls Work?

Shade balls work by simply floating on the water's surface and covering it. They are usually made of a special type of plastic called high-density polyethylene (HDPE). This plastic is safe for drinking water and is strong enough to last a long time. The balls are often black, which helps them block sunlight more effectively.

When millions of these balls are released onto a reservoir, they spread out and form a thick layer. This layer acts like a blanket, protecting the water underneath from the sun and wind. This simple method helps save water and keep it clean without needing complex machinery or chemicals.

Where Are Shade Balls Used?

Shade balls have been used in various places around the world, especially in areas facing water shortages. One of the most famous examples is in California, United States. In 2015, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power released millions of shade balls into the Silver Lake Reservoir and Ivanhoe Reservoir. This was done to protect the water quality and reduce evaporation during a severe drought.

They have also been used in other countries for similar reasons, sometimes even in smaller settings like hotel swimming pools to reduce evaporation and keep the water cooler.
