History
A Look Back in Time
Long ago, before people from Europe arrived, Native Americans lived in the Shady Grove area. They built a large city called Chiaha. The main village was on a big island in the French Broad River. Later, settlers from Tennessee named this island Zimmerman's Island.
Early European Visitors
In the 1500s, the Shady Grove area was part of the Coosa chiefdom. This was a powerful group of Native American villages. Spanish explorers, like Hernando De Soto and Juan Pardo, traveled through this area with their soldiers.
