Shady Hollow is a special kind of community in Travis County, Texas, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that looks like a town but isn't officially a city. Part of Shady Hollow is even inside the big city of Austin.

Shady Hollow is about 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Downtown Austin. It's also close to the border between Travis and Hays counties. In 2020, about 4,822 people lived here.

The story of Shady Hollow began in 1972. A company called Austin Savings and Loan Owners started building homes on about 600 acres (2.4 km²) of land.

By 1978, the people who bought homes in Shady Hollow decided to form a group. They called themselves the Shady Hollow Homeowners Corporation. They felt the developer was building too many homes in the area.

The homeowners and the developer talked things over. They reached an agreement that was good for everyone. This agreement led to the creation of parks and fun places along Slaughter Creek. One of these places was the Park on Doe Run.

Shady Hollow also gained other cool features. These included a community center, tennis courts, and a basketball court. In 1984, the developer officially gave these parks and facilities to the Shady Hollow Homeowners Corporation.

Geography and Location

Shady Hollow is located in a great spot in Texas. Its exact coordinates are 30°10′3″N 97°51′44″W. This is about 10 miles (16 km) southwest of downtown Austin.

In 2000, the area of Shady Hollow was about 5.4 square miles (14 km²). All of this land was dry land, with no large bodies of water. Before the 2010 census, some parts of Shady Hollow became part of the city of Austin. This made the total area smaller, about 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²), and it's still all land.
