Tan Sri Dr. Haji Shafie bin Haji Mohd Salleh (Jawi: شافعي بن محمد صالح; born September 29, 1946 – died September 11, 2019) was an important Malaysian politician. He served as the Minister of Higher Education for Malaysia. He was also the Chief Scout of Malaysia, leading the scouting movement in the country.

What Was Shafie Salleh's Career Path?

Early Career and Public Service

Shafie Salleh started his career in public service. He was the Head of the Research Centre at the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN) for five years. This role involved leading studies and research for the government.

After that, he became the Division Secretary for the Ministry of Human Resources. This ministry helps with jobs and workers' rights. Later, he worked in the Prime Minister's department. He was an Undersecretary for Policy Analysis. This meant he helped research and develop new government policies.

Shafie Salleh's Political Journey

Shafie Salleh was also a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented the Kuala Langat area in Selangor. Being an MP means he was chosen by the people to speak for them in the government.

He was part of the UMNO party. He served on their International Relations committee. Over time, he held several important government positions. He was the Parliamentary Secretary for the Minister of Finance. Later, he became the Deputy Minister of Finance. His highest role was the Minister of Higher Education. In this role, he was in charge of universities and colleges in Malaysia.

During his time in politics, Shafie Salleh spoke about education. He supported the rights and aspirations of the Malay community. He explained that Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) was set up for Malays. This was an agreement made by everyone.
