Shakura S'Aida's Early Life and Music
Shakura S'Aida was born in Brooklyn, New York. She lived in Switzerland for a while before her family moved to Canada.
Before starting her solo career, Shakura was the main singer for a big music group called Kaleefah. This group had 13 members and played world music. She also sang backup for famous singers like Rita MacNeil and Patti LaBelle. She even worked with jazz legends such as Jimmy Smith and Ruth Brown. Her amazing music has earned her many nominations for the Juno Awards, which are big music awards in Canada.
In 2008, Shakura released her first solo album, Blueprint. She released her second album, Brown Sugar, in 2010 with Ruf Records. Then, in 2012, she released a double album called Time with Electro-Fi Records.
Shakura S'Aida as an Actress
Besides singing, Shakura S'Aida is also a talented actress. In 2004, she starred in a play in Toronto called Consecrated Ground. She also appeared in the movie Doomstown in 2006. More recently, she was in the film Brown Girl Begins in 2018.
In 2013, she was nominated for a Blues Music Award. This award was for 'Contemporary Blues Female Artist', which means she was recognized as one of the best female blues singers of her time.
