Shakura S'Aida was born in Brooklyn, New York, in the United States. Before moving to Canada, she lived in Switzerland for a while.
Shakura started her music career as the lead singer of a big group called Kaleefah. This group had 13 members and played world music. After that, she began her solo career, performing on her own. She also sang backup for famous artists like Rita MacNeil and Patti LaBelle. Shakura has also worked with jazz musicians such as Jimmy Smith and Ruth Brown.

Shakura S'Aida has released several albums. Her first solo album, Blueprint, came out in 2008. She released her second album, Brown Sugar, in 2010 with Ruf Records. In 2012, she released a double album called Time through Electro-Fi Records.
