The Shamrock Shake is a special green milkshake that McDonald's sells for a short time each year. It has a cool mint flavor. You can usually find it in March, just in time to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. It's a popular treat in the United States, Canada, and Ireland.
History of the Shamrock Shake
The Shamrock Shake first appeared in 1970. A company called Rogers Merchandising in Chicago helped create it. When it first came out, it tasted like lemon and lime. It was made with vanilla ice cream, lemon-lime sherbet, and vanilla syrup.
By 1973, the recipe changed. The lemon and lime flavors were removed. It became a green-colored vanilla shake. Later, it changed again to the mint flavor we know today.
You can usually buy Shamrock Shakes in February and March. They are sold in select McDonald's restaurants in the U.S., Canada, and Ireland.
How McDonald's Advertised the Shake
In the 1980s, McDonald's used a special character to help sell the Shamrock Shake. This character was called Uncle O'Grimacey. He was a green version of the well-known Grimace character. Uncle O'Grimacey would visit McDonaldland in March. McDonald's no longer uses this character in their ads.
In 1980, McDonald's also tried selling a "Shamrock Sundae." This dessert had vanilla ice cream with a mint green Shamrock syrup on top. However, it did not sell very well. McDonald's stopped selling the Shamrock Sundae after only one year.
In 2017, McDonald's offered some new versions of the Shamrock Shake. These included the Shamrock Chocolate Shake and the Shamrock Chocolate Chip Frappé. They also introduced Shamrock Mocha and Shamrock Hot Chocolate drinks.
