Shanghai City is found in the state of Illinois, which is in the central part of the United States. It's part of Warren County, a county known for its farming and quiet countryside. Being an unincorporated community means it's a group of homes and perhaps a few buildings, but it doesn't have a mayor or city council of its own.
How Shanghai City Got Its Name
This community wasn't always called Shanghai City. Its first name was Ionia. The name "Shanghai City" came from a special kind of chicken called a Shanghai rooster. These roosters were known for being very strong and were often used in rooster competitions. It's interesting how a type of bird gave this place its unique name!
A Look Back in Time
Shanghai City was once a much busier place. In the 1850s, it was at its most active. About 250 people lived there, and it had several businesses. One of the important businesses was a factory that made wagons. Imagine a time when wagons were the main way people traveled and moved goods!
What Happened to Shanghai City?
Over time, the number of people living in Shanghai City slowly started to decrease. This happened throughout the 1900s. A big change came in 1968 when a powerful tornado hit the area. After the tornado, only six homes and a school building were left. This event greatly changed the community, making it much smaller than it once was.
Today, Shanghai City remains a small unincorporated community, a quiet reminder of its past.
