Alexis is a small village in the state of Illinois, United States. It is special because it sits right on the border of two counties: Mercer County and Warren County. In 2020, about 793 people lived there.

The part of Alexis in Mercer County is also considered part of a larger area called the Quad Cities Metropolitan Statistical Area. This area includes cities like Davenport and Moline.

A Look Back: Alexis's History

Alexis was first started in 1870. It was originally called Alexandria or Alexandria Station. This happened when the railroad line was built to reach that spot.

However, the people who founded the town soon found out there was another town in Illinois already named Alexander. To avoid confusion, they decided to pick a new name. Around that time, a special visitor from Russia, Grand Duke Alexis, was touring the United States. The town was then renamed in his honor, becoming "Alexis."

Where is Alexis?

Alexis is located right on the line between Warren and Mercer counties. Imagine the village as a rectangle. About four blocks from north to south are in Warren County. The other two blocks, also north to south, are in Mercer County. The village stretches about six blocks from east to west.

In the year 2000, most of Alexis's residents lived in Warren County. About 57.8% of the people lived there, while 42.2% lived in Mercer County.

Alexis is about 14 miles (23 km) northeast of Monmouth. Monmouth is the main town, or "county seat," for Warren County. It is also about 19 miles (31 km) southeast of Aledo, which is the county seat for Mercer County.

The land in Alexis is mostly flat. Most of the water from the village flows south into a small stream. This stream eventually leads to Henderson Creek, which then flows into the Mississippi River. The very northern part of Alexis drains into another small stream called Toms Creek.
