The Shannock Historic District is a special old village. It sits along the Pawcatuck River in Rhode Island. This area is split between two towns: Richmond and Charlestown, Rhode Island. The village is known for its historic buildings. Many of these buildings were part of a busy mill community long ago.

What is the Shannock Historic District?

A historic district is an area with important old buildings. These buildings show how people lived and worked in the past. The Shannock Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it's officially recognized as a place worth protecting.

Where is Shannock Village Located?

Shannock Village stretches along several roads. These include Old Shannock Road, Railroad Street, and Shannock Village Road. The village is found between two places where roads cross the Pawcatuck River. This river forms the border between Richmond and Charlestown. Most of the village is in Richmond. However, some parts extend into Charlestown.

What Buildings Are in Shannock?

The village has two main factory areas. These are called mill complexes. One is the Carmichael plant on the west side. The other is the Columbia Narrow Fabrics Company complex. This one is closer to the center of the village.

Most buildings in Shannock are homes. These were built for the workers who lived there. They were built in the second half of the 1800s. These houses are usually close to the road. You can also see two large houses. They were built around 1850. These houses belonged to the mill owners. There is also a beautiful Late Victorian style house.
