The Shannon Methodist Church, Shannon Mound, and historical cemetery.

Shannon is a small place in Mason County, Kentucky, United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and buildings that doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Shannon is located southwest of a bigger town called Maysville, right along a main road called U.S. Route 62. It's also close to another small town named Sardis.

Exploring Shannon

Shannon might be small, but it has some interesting history! One of the most important features of the area is a large, ancient mound. This mound sits near the Shannon Methodist Church, which is on one of the highest spots in the community.

The Ancient Mound

This special mound was built a very long time ago by people who lived in this region before written history began. These groups are often called "Mound Builders." The mound itself is shaped like an oval, almost like a giant egg made of earth. It stands about 8 to 10 feet tall, which is like two or three grown-ups standing on top of each other! It's also very wide, about 100 feet across.

Who Built the Mound?

Scientists called archaeologists love to study places like this to learn about the past. They use special tools to dig carefully and find clues about ancient people. However, this particular mound in Shannon has old graves inside it. Because these graves are important historical sites, archaeologists haven't been able to dig much into the mound. This means we don't know as much as we'd like about exactly which group of ancient people built it or why. Still, it's a fascinating reminder of the people who lived in Kentucky many centuries ago.
