The Shannon-Williamson Ranch is a historic place in Antioch, California. It was once a large farm owned by the Williamson family. This family moved to Antioch in 1867. They received the land for their ranch from the U.S. government in 1874. Even President Ulysses S. Grant signed the document!
The Shannon-Williamson Ranch
A Look Back in Time
The first house on the ranch burned down in 1895. But the family quickly rebuilt it. The house you see today is the one built after that fire. The ranch was a busy place from 1875 until 1949.
The ranch was much bigger back then. It covered about 4,000 acres! The family grew many crops like wheat, barley, and hay. They also raised farm animals.
In 1987, the ranch was saved from being lost. Donald Williamson, who lived there, worked hard to protect it. This helped keep its history alive.
What's Left Today?
Today, the ranch is much smaller. It has about 3 acres left. On this land, you can find a two-story house built in the Italianate style. There are also three barns and other small buildings. You can even see a small orchard.
The ranch is not open to the public right now. There are no plans for what will happen to the house and land in the future. However, the area around it still remembers the ranch. A housing area and a shopping mall across the street are named after it. A fence surrounds the entire property.
