Sharanjit Leyl was born in Singapore. Her family is of Indian descent and moved to Singapore in the 1930s. When she was a teenager, Sharanjit moved with her family to Washington, D.C., in the United States. Her father worked there for the Singapore Ministry of Defence. He helped buy important equipment for the country's defense.
Education and Studies
In Washington, D.C., Sharanjit went to the University of Maryland College Park. She studied two subjects there: journalism and English Literature. After that, she moved to Vancouver, Canada. She earned a master's degree in English Literature from the University of British Columbia. Her studies focused on writers who explored themes from countries that were once colonies.

Starting in Broadcasting
Sharanjit Leyl began her career in broadcasting in 1997. She worked at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. While there, she reported for a well-known show called "The Pacific Rim Report." In 1999, she moved back to Singapore. She took on a similar role at a financial news company called Bridge Information Systems.
Working at Bloomberg and BBC
In March 2000, Sharanjit joined Bloomberg Television. She moved to Tokyo, Japan, where Bloomberg's main office was. She presented their main three-hour news show, "On The Money Asia." She reported on important financial news and big world events. This included the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Sharanjit was very important in deciding what news Bloomberg's Asian programs would cover.
Sharanjit Leyl joined the BBC in September 2003. She worked as a producer and reporter. She has reported and presented from many different places. These include Pakistan, Tokyo, and London. She also presented other BBC shows. Some of these were Impact, Global, and World News Today.
