Sharanjit Leyl (born in 1973) is a Singaporean journalist and TV presenter. She used to work for the BBC. She often hosted shows like Asia Business Report and Newsday. These shows were seen on BBC One, the BBC News Channel, and BBC World News. She worked from the BBC's studio in Singapore. Sharanjit also reported and produced for these shows, including World Business Report. She reported for radio on BBC World Service business programs. She also wrote for the BBC news website.
Early Life and School
Sharanjit Leyl was born in Singapore. Her family is Sikh and of Indian background. They moved to Singapore in the 1930s. When Sharanjit was a teenager, her family moved to Washington D.C. in the United States. Her father worked there for the Singapore Ministry of Defence. He helped get supplies for defence.
Sharanjit studied journalism and English Literature at the University of Maryland College Park. After that, she moved to Vancouver, Canada. There, she earned a master's degree in English Literature from the University of British Columbia. Her studies focused on writers from countries that used to be colonies, like Salman Rushdie.
Her Career in News
Sharanjit Leyl started her career in broadcasting in 1997. She worked at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. While there, she reported for a well-known show called "The Pacific Rim Report". In 1999, she moved back to Singapore. She had a similar job at a company called Bridge Information Systems. This company provided financial news.
In March 2000, she joined Bloomberg Television. She moved to their main office in Tokyo, Japan. There, she presented their main three-hour news show, "On The Money Asia". She reported on important financial news and big events. This included the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Sharanjit played an important part in deciding what news Bloomberg's Asian shows would cover.
Sharanjit joined the BBC in September 2003. She worked as a producer and reporter. She has reported and presented from many different places. These include Pakistan, Tokyo, and London. She has also hosted other BBC shows. These include Impact, Global, World Business Report, Asia Today, and World News Today. She hosted these shows at different times while in London.
She has interviewed many important people. These include the Chairman of Starbucks, Howard Schultz. She also interviewed the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau. Other interviews include the Prime Minister of Pakistan and former leaders of Singapore and Malaysia. She also spoke with leaders of the World Bank.
On May 8, 2024, Sharanjit Leyl became the new Chancellor of Bath Spa University. This means she is the first female Chancellor of the university. She is also the second Chancellor in almost 20 years. And she is the first Asian Chancellor of a British university in the United Kingdom.

Sharanjit Leyl lives with her English husband and their son. She spends her time between Singapore and Bath, Somerset. For fun, she enjoys running, learning about politics, art, and theatre.
