Shashanka (pronounced Sha-shang-ka) was a very important king in the history of Bengal. He was the first ruler to create a strong, independent kingdom in the Bengal region, which was known as the Gauda Kingdom. He ruled during the 7th century. Some historians believe he ruled from around 600 CE to 636 or 637 CE. Other records suggest his reign was from 590 CE to 625 CE.
King Shashanka lived at the same time as other famous rulers like Harsha and Bhaskaravarman from Kamarupa. His main city, or capital, was called Karnasubarna. This city is located in what is now Murshidabad in West Bengal. Many people believe that the Bengali calendar started during his rule. This is because the calendar's beginning date falls within the time he was king.
