Early Life and Musical Start
Shaunna Hall grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. In middle school, she played the trumpet in the school band. As a teenager, she became serious about playing the guitar. She later studied songwriting at the Blue Bear School of Music in San Francisco.
Career Beginnings in the 1980s
In the early 1980s, Hall joined her first band, The Crash Puppies. Later in the decade, she and bassist Christa Hillhouse started a duo called Cool and Unusual Punishment.
Hall and Hillhouse then joined another band with drummer Wanda Day. Through this group, Hall met singer Linda Perry. When that band ended, Hall, Perry, Hillhouse, and Day decided to form their own group. In 1989, they created the alternative rock band 4 Non Blondes.
Success with 4 Non Blondes
In 1990, 4 Non Blondes won an award for Best Rock Band from the SF Weekly. The band signed with Interscope Records and released their only studio album, Bigger, Better, Faster, More!, in 1992.
Hall wrote or co-wrote five songs on the album, including the popular song "Spaceman". She left the band in 1992 while the album was still being recorded because of creative disagreements. Another guitarist, Louis Metoyer, was brought in to finish the album.
Projects in the 1990s
After leaving 4 Non Blondes, Hall started a new all-female band called Bad Dog Play Dead in 1992. The group played a mix of funk, rock, and pop music.
From 1993 to 1995, Hall played in a hard rock band called The ... of Fame. The group first performed at a benefit concert for her former bandmate, Wanda Day.
In 1996, Hall worked with the band Tribe 8 on the Home Alive! album. This project also featured famous bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden. The album helped raise money and awareness for self-defense classes for women. This was in honor of Mia Zapata, a singer who was the victim of a violent crime.
Hall also worked with Tribe 8 on their albums Fist City and Role Models for America. She also played with the group The Eric McFadden Experience, which won an award in 1998.
Music and Projects in the 2000s
Working with George Clinton
In July 2002, Hall began touring with the legendary funk group George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic (P-Funk). At first, she worked as a sound engineer for the band.
After five years of touring and working with the group, she officially became P-Funk's first female guitarist in 2007. She has toured the world with them and contributed to their albums.
Other Creative Work
In 2000, Hall worked as a sound designer for an early online video game called "Tamale Loco". She also formed a band called Storm, Inc. with singer Storm Large and wrote songs for their album The Calm Years.
In 2002, Hall wrote and directed a short film called The Beauty of Betrayal. She also created a multimedia project called Electrofunkadelica in 2006. For this project, she created a stage character named BB Kink, who was an electro-blues guitar player.
