Mia Zapata's Life and Music
Early Life and Band Beginnings
Mia Zapata grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. She went to high school at Presentation Academy. By the age of nine, Mia had learned to play both the guitar and the piano. She loved punk rock music. She was also inspired by jazz, blues, and R&B singers like Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, and Ray Charles.
In 1984, Mia started college at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. In September 1986, she and three friends formed their punk rock band, The Gits. In 1989, the band moved to Seattle, Washington. Mia found a job at a local bar. The four band members lived together in an old house they called "The Rathouse."
The Gits: Rising to Fame
From 1990 to 1991, The Gits released several popular songs on local independent music labels. The band quickly became famous in Seattle's music scene. They often played shows with their friends' bands. In 1992, The Gits released their first album, Frenching the Bully. This album included popular songs like "Another Shot of Whiskey."
The band's popularity grew a lot within the grunge music scene in Seattle. They then started working on their second album, Enter: The Conquering Chicken, which came out in 1993. The Gits had planned a big tour across the U.S. and Europe. They were also being approached by different record labels.
Mia came from a wealthy family. However, she often chose to live simply without many fancy things. Her father said that Mia lived "in two different worlds." She had a comfortable family life, but she also didn't care much for money or possessions. Friends described Mia as someone who immediately earned respect and interest from others. She was also very connected to her community. Many people carried yellow roses to her funeral, which was a special way to remember her.
The Gits included guitarist Andrew "Joe Spleen" Kessler, drummer Steve Moriarty, and bassist Matt Dresdner. They met in Ohio in 1986. The band moved to Seattle to join the city's growing music scene. They quickly gained many fans in the local underground punk scene. The band, and Mia especially, became very popular with the feminist community in Seattle.
In 1990, The Gits went on a successful international tour without the help of a major record label. Their first album, Frenching the Bully, received good reviews. After Mia's death, the band finished and released their second album, Enter: The Conquering Chicken. This album also had popular songs like "Seaweed."
Mia is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery in her hometown of Louisville. The Seattle music community, including famous bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, raised $70,000. This money was used to hire a private investigator for three years to look into her case. Even when the money ran out, the investigator, Leigh Hearon, continued to work on the case on her own time.
Finding Justice
In 2003, a man named Jesus Mezquia was arrested. He was charged in connection with Mia Zapata's murder. This arrest happened because of DNA evidence. Mezquia had a history of violence. However, there was no known connection between Mezquia and Mia Zapata before her death.
Mezquia did not speak in his own defense during the trial. He said he was innocent. The prosecution believed he saw Mia leave a bar and followed her. They said he attacked her and dragged her to his car. Mezquia was found guilty in 2004. He was sentenced to 37 years in prison. After an appeal, his sentence was changed to 36 years. Mezquia died in a Washington hospital in January 2021.
Her Legacy and Impact
Home Alive and Self-Defense
After Mia Zapata's murder, her friends created a self-defense group called Home Alive. Home Alive organized benefit concerts and released albums. Many bands, including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Heart, took part. Joan Jett also recorded an album with the remaining members of The Gits. It was called Evil Stig (which is "Gits Live" spelled backward). The Home Alive group offered different courses, from managing anger to using pepper spray and learning martial arts.
Remembering Mia: Documentaries and Influence
In 2005, a documentary film called The Gits Movie was made. It was about Mia's life, the band The Gits, and the Seattle music scene. The film was first shown at the Seattle International Film Festival in May 2005. Another version of the film was shown two years later at the 2007 SXSW (South By Southwest) Film Festival. The final version was released in theaters in over 20 cities in North America on July 7, 2008. This was 15 years after Mia's death. The next day, the film was released on DVD along with a "Best of the Gits" CD.
Mia's death made the Seattle community feel a sense of sadness and fear. The Seattle Times newspaper said her murder was the moment "the Seattle scene lost its sense of invincibility." A friend named Cristen Storm said Mia's death was a "reality check." It showed that bad things can happen to anyone, even strong and outspoken women.
Mia's Lasting Symbol
Mia Zapata is often seen as a symbol for feminist activism. Some people called her a martyr or an angel. However, her bandmate Matt Dresdner said that Mia "became this icon for feminism and all kinds of things that she had very little to do with in her actual life." Another bandmate, Steve Moriarty, wrote that Mia wanted to connect with people personally through her lyrics, rather than politically. It is thought that she became linked to the riot grrrl movement because she was a powerful female musician in the Northwest during that time.
