About Shawfield Amateurs F.C.

Shawfield Amateurs was a special kind of team. It was a "works team." This means the club was linked to a big company. For Shawfield Amateurs, it was the J & J White chemical plant. This plant was in the Shawfield area of Rutherglen.

The team became well-known in the 1930s. They were very good in the Scottish Amateur Football League. They won the Third Division in 1935–36. The next year, in 1936–37, they won the Second Division. For most of their time, the team wore red shirts.

Playing in the Scottish Cup

The club played in the main Scottish Cup four times. These were in the 1947–48, 1954–55, 1955–56, and 1956–57 seasons.

In 1947–48, they played in a special part of the cup. It was called the Midlands section of the Scottish Qualifying Cup. By doing well, they got to play in the main Scottish Cup. They lost 8–0 to St Mirren F.C. in their first game.

In the 1950s, it was a bit easier to reach the main cup. This was because the Scottish Qualifying Cup was not held then. The club stopped playing after the 1963–64 season. This was around the same time the chemical plant closed down.

Their Home Ground

The team's home ground was on Quay Road in Rutherglen. The pitch and other facilities were part of the plant's recreation area. This means the company provided them for their workers.

It's interesting to know that Clyde F.C. won the Scottish Cup in 1955. Their home ground, Shawfield Stadium, was very close. It was only a few hundred yards from Shawfield Amateurs' ground.
