Shawn Christopher started her music career as a backing singer. From 1982 to 1985, she toured with the famous R&B singer Chaka Khan. She also sang with an industrial dance band called My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult. Later, she joined the group Sonia Dada. Shawn Christopher is the sister of R&B singer and producer Gavin Christopher.
