Industrial music facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Industrial music is a type of music that uses harsh, mechanical, and sometimes unusual sounds and themes. The name "industrial" was first used in the mid-1970s. This happened when Industrial Records was started by members of the band Throbbing Gristle and artist Monte Cazazza.

While the name came from Throbbing Gristle in the United Kingdom, other important artists and record labels also appeared in the United States and other countries. Early industrial artists liked to experiment with noise. They also explored topics that made people think. Some well-known industrial musicians include Throbbing Gristle, Monte Cazazza, SPK, Boyd Rice, Cabaret Voltaire, and Z'EV. In 1977, Throbbing Gristle released their first album, The Second Annual Report. On it, they used the phrase "industrial music for industrial people." The industrial music scene also grew a lot in Chicago. The record label Wax Trax! Records in Chicago was very important for this music style.

What Influenced Industrial Music?

Early Sounds and Artists

Many different things helped create industrial music. One influence was musique concrète from the 1940s. This is a type of music made from recorded sounds that are then edited and put together. Industrial music also took ideas from various world music styles.

Bands from the rock era also played a part. These included Faust, Kraftwerk, and the Velvet Underground. Lou Reed's album Metal Machine Music (1975) was another key influence. Musicians also looked to writers like William S. Burroughs and J. G. Ballard. Artists such as Brion Gysin also inspired them.

How Industrial Music Grew

Spreading the Sound

At first, only a few groups linked to Industrial Records in the late 1970s used the term "industrial." But over time, the name grew to include many more artists. These new artists were influenced by the original movement. They also used an "industrial" style in their music.

The genre's influence spread and mixed with other styles. These included ambient music, synth music, and rock. Bands like Front 242, Front Line Assembly, KMFDM, and Sister Machine Gun are examples. Many of these bands were connected to the Chicago-based Wax Trax! Records label.

Main Types of Industrial Music

Electro-industrial music is a major subgenre that started in the 1980s. The most famous bands in this style are Front Line Assembly and Skinny Puppy. Two other very important mixed genres are industrial rock and industrial metal. Bands in these styles include Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Rammstein, and Fear Factory. Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, and Rammstein each released an album that sold over a million copies in the 1990s.
