Shawn Drover's Music Journey
Shawn started playing drums when he was 13 years old. In 1993, he helped create the power metal band Eidolon with his brother, Glen.
Joining Megadeth
In October 2004, Shawn joined the famous thrash metal band Megadeth. He stepped in just six days before a big tour, replacing their previous drummer. He stayed with Megadeth for ten years, playing many shows and recording albums.
New Bands and Projects
After a decade with Megadeth, Shawn and guitarist Chris Broderick decided to leave the band in November 2014. They then formed a new band called Act of Defiance. This group released two albums.
Later, Shawn started another band called Withering Scorn. He also teamed up with his brother Glen again. In July 2023, they released their first album together, called "Prophets of Demise." They are currently working on their next album.
Shawn as a Guitarist and Songwriter
Shawn has also played guitar since 1980, learning from his brother Glen. He wrote most of the music and lyrics for Eidolon's albums. He even played guitar on stage with Megadeth a few times, sometimes switching instruments with his brother. Shawn also helped write some of Megadeth's songs, including "Head Crusher" and "Built for War."
Unique Drumming Style
Shawn has a special way of playing drums called "Open handed drumming". Unlike many drummers who cross their hands, Shawn keeps time with his left hand on the hi-hat and uses his right hand for the snare drum. This is because he is left-handed.
Longest-Serving Megadeth Drummer
Shawn was Megadeth's longest-serving drummer, playing with them for over 10 years. He was also the third longest-serving member of the band overall, after David Ellefson and Dave Mustaine. In November 2014, he left Megadeth to explore his own music interests. After leaving, he formed Act of Defiance with Chris Broderick. That band stopped playing together around July 2023.
Shawn's Life Outside Music
Shawn lives near Atlanta, Georgia, with his wife, daughter, son, and grandson. His grandson was born on Shawn's birthday, May 5, 2010.
Shawn is a big fan of sports, especially the NFL and College Football. His favorite NFL team is the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also loves hockey and supports teams like the Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins. Shawn enjoys golfing and often plays in charity golf events.
Shawn's Drum Gear
Shawn uses specific brands for his drumming equipment. He uses Yamaha Drums, Sabian cymbals, Evans Drumheads, Toca percussion, Extreme Isolation headphones, and Pro-Mark drumsticks. For tours between 2004 and 2010, he used a special drum setup called the "MegaKit."
