Shed Long's Baseball Journey

Starting with the Cincinnati Reds

Shed Long went to Jacksonville High School in Jacksonville, Alabama. The Cincinnati Reds baseball team chose him in the 12th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft. This was his first step into professional baseball.

He started playing professionally in 2013 with the Arizona League Reds. He hit for a .256 batting average and had one home run. In 2014, he played for the Billings Mustangs.

Long began his career as a catcher, but in 2015, he changed his position to second baseman. He played for the Dayton Dragons that year, hitting .283 with six home runs. In 2016, he played for both the Dayton Dragons and the Daytona Tortugas. He had a great year, hitting 15 home runs and stealing 21 bases. In 2017, he continued to play well for Daytona and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, hitting 16 home runs.

After the 2017 season, the Reds added Long to their main group of players, called the 40-man roster. He spent 2018 playing for Pensacola, where he hit 12 home runs.

Playing for the Seattle Mariners

On January 21, 2019, Shed Long was part of a trade. The Reds traded him to the New York Yankees. Then, the Yankees traded him to the Seattle Mariners.

Long started the 2019 season with the Tacoma Rainiers, a minor league team. On May 10, he was called up to play in Major League Baseball for the first time. He made his first MLB game appearance on May 11 against the Boston Red Sox. In 42 games for Seattle, Long hit .263 with 5 home runs.

In 2020, Long's hitting numbers went down. He hit only .171 with 3 home runs. On September 22, 2020, he had surgery on his right shin because of an injury, which ended his season early.

Long continued to recover from his injury in 2021. On June 7, he was able to play again. A special moment happened on June 20, 2021. He hit a walk-off grand slam in the tenth inning. This amazing hit gave the Mariners a 6–2 win against the Tampa Bay Rays. Later in August, he had another shin injury, which ended his 2021 season. After the season, he became a free agent, meaning he could sign with any team.

Time with Other Teams

On February 16, 2022, Long signed a contract with the Baltimore Orioles. He played in different minor league teams for them, including the Florida Complex League Orioles and Norfolk Tides. He was released by the Orioles in August.

On April 28, 2023, Long joined the High Point Rockers team. He had a very good season with them, hitting .307 with 13 home runs and 20 stolen bases. He was even named an All-Star for the Atlantic League.

In April 2024, Long signed with the Olmecas de Tabasco in Mexico. He played only a few games before being released.
