History of the Museums
How the Trust Began
Before the Sheffield Museums Trust was formed, there were two separate groups. These groups looked after different types of museums in Sheffield.
Museums Sheffield was a charity started in 1998. It managed the city's art galleries and non-industrial museums. These included the Graves Art Gallery, Millennium Gallery, and Weston Park Museum. This group was in charge of caring for Sheffield's art, history, and science collections. Their aim was to connect with visitors and share stories about Sheffield.
The Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust (SIMT) was the other group. It ran the museums that focused on Sheffield's industrial history. These were Kelham Island Museum, Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, and Shepherd Wheel Workshop. SIMT was first set up in 1994 as "Kelham Island Museum Ltd." It became the Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust in 1998. This happened when the city council gave them control of Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet and Shepherd Wheel. SIMT was praised for fixing Kelham Island Museum after floods in 2007.
Joining Together
For many years, Museums Sheffield and SIMT worked closely together. Then, on April 1, 2021, they officially joined forces. This merger created the single organisation we now know as the Sheffield Museums Trust.
Places to Visit
The Sheffield Museums Trust manages six exciting sites across the city. Each one offers a unique look into art, history, or industry.
Art and History Museums
- Graves Art Gallery - This gallery shows off British and European art. You can see both old and new artworks here.
- Millennium Gallery - This museum has collections and exhibitions. They tell stories about Sheffield's local history and more.
- Weston Park Museum - This is Sheffield's biggest museum. It features many exhibitions about local themes and the city's past.
Industrial History Museums
