Shelley Hack was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, on July 6, 1947. She was the oldest of six children. Her mother used to be a model.
Shelley went to Greenwich Academy and then Smith College. During her time at college, she spent a year studying archeology. She did this at the University of Sydney in Australia.
Shelley's Career Journey
Starting as a Model
Shelley Hack began her career as a fashion model when she was a teenager. Her very first job was on the cover of Glamour magazine.
Later, she became the main model for Revlon's "Charlie" perfume. This was from the mid-1970s until the early 1980s. During this time, Charlie became the best-selling perfume in the world. Life magazine even called her one of the "million-dollar faces" in the beauty world. This meant she was one of the few models who could get very good deals with big makeup companies. People recognized her instantly, and her name became famous. Shelley Hack was one of the top "supermodels of the 1970s.
Acting in Movies and TV Shows
Shelley Hack's first movie role was a small part in Woody Allen's film Annie Hall (1977). This movie won an Academy Award. After that, she had a main role in the romance movie If Ever I See You Again.
Soon, she was chosen to join the TV series Charlie's Angels. She replaced Kate Jackson and played the smart character Tiffany Welles. She was on the show for one season (1979–1980). Many actresses wanted the role, including Michelle Pfeiffer.
When Shelley first appeared on Charlie's Angels, the show's ratings went up. Her first episode was number one that week. However, the ratings later started to go down. Shelley left the show in February 1980. She later said that leaving was a "business decision" and that she "never expected to be there more than a year."
After Charlie's Angels, Shelley Hack played many different roles. She starred in Vanities (1981), a TV show about three Texas cheerleaders. She also got good reviews for her role in Martin Scorsese's film The King of Comedy (1983).
She had main roles in two popular movies: the comedy-horror film Troll (1986) and the horror film The Stepfather (1987). She also appeared regularly on two TV series in the 1980s: Cutter to Houston (1983) and Jack and Mike (1986–87).
In 1984, Shelley was going to join the TV show Night Court. She was cast as a public defender named Christine Sullivan. However, the role was changed and it didn't work out as planned. Shelley and the show's producer agreed that she would not continue with the series.
Shelley Hack also narrated an audiobook called The Lord of Hawkfell Island. AudioFile magazine said her voice made the Viking story come alive.
Later Career and Activism
In 1987, Shelley Hack became the national chairperson for a campaign. This campaign was by the National Lung Association and the American Medical Association. It aimed to teach young women about the dangers of cigarette smoking. Shelley herself used to smoke.
She later earned a master's degree in business. This was from New York Institute of Technology. After that, she mostly stopped acting.
In October 2000, Shelley returned to the Charlie's Angels office for a TV show called Biography. She was a guest host for "Hello Angels Week." In January 2008, she appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show. The episode showed her as the Revlon Charlie perfume model in a 1976 TV ad. Shelley said, "It was a time when women were changing." She added that the Charlie commercials and Charlie's Angels helped women feel "a little more empowered."
Shelley Hack and her husband, Harry Winer, are co-presidents of a company called Smash Media. This company creates movies, TV shows, and new media content.
Political Activism and Media Work
Shelley Hack has also been involved in politics and media work. In 1997, she helped with elections in Bosnia-Herzegovina. She supervised voting and polling stations. She also produced the first-ever televised presidential debates there.
In 1997, Shelley started her own company, Shelley Hack Media Consultancy (SHMC). For ten years, she worked with a large media company in Eastern Europe. She focused on creating TV programs that included different ethnic groups. She became a media consultant for countries that were recovering from conflict. Her work included helping to spread independent media like newspapers, radio, and television. She believed this was important because governments in some areas often control TV, which can give people biased information.
She also became a member of the Pacific Council on International Policy (PCIP). This is an independent group that works on global issues.
Personal Life
Shelley Hack has been married to film director and university professor Harry Winer since 1990. They have one child, a daughter named Devon Rose Winer, who was born in 1990.
