Shelton Joseph Fabre is an American Catholic leader. He is currently the Archbishop of Louisville in Kentucky. He started this role on March 30, 2022.
Before this, he was a bishop in Louisiana. He led the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux from 2013 to 2022. He also served as an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of New Orleans from 2007 to 2013.

Growing Up and Learning
Shelton Fabre was born in New Roads, Louisiana, on October 25, 1963. He went to school in New Roads. In 1981, he graduated from Catholic High School of Pointe Coupée. He was the top student in his class.
After high school, he went to Saint Joseph Seminary College in Louisiana. He earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1985. Then, Fabre continued his studies in Belgium at the American College of Louvain. He studied at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He earned two degrees in religious studies in 1987 and 1989. On December 10, 1988, he became a deacon.
Becoming a Priest
Shelton Fabre became a priest on August 5, 1989. Bishop Stanley Ott ordained him in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He served the Diocese of Baton Rouge.
After becoming a priest, Fabre worked as an assistant pastor. He served in several parishes:
- St. Alphonsus Liguori in Greenwell Springs (1989 to 1992)
- St. George in Baton Rouge (1992 to 1994)
- St. Isidore the Farmer in Baker (1994 to 1995)
- St. Joseph Cathedral (1995 to 1996)
Later, Fabre became the main pastor at other churches. These included St. Joseph Parish in Grosse Tete and Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Maringouin, Louisiana. In 2004, he became pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Baton Rouge.
During this time, Fabre also held other important roles. He was a chaplain at Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola in 1994. He directed the Office of Black Catholics from 1990 to 2005. He also worked with the marriage tribunal. Fabre was chosen to be on the clergy personnel board. He also led the Pastoral Planning Committee for the diocese. He served as a chaplain for St. Joseph's Academy. He was also a dean for a part of the diocese.
Serving in New Orleans
On December 13, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI chose Fabre to be an auxiliary bishop. This meant he would help the main bishop in New Orleans. He was also named the titular bishop of Pudentiana.
Archbishop Alfred Hughes made him a bishop on February 28, 2007. This ceremony took place in New Orleans at the Saint Louis, King of France, Cathedral Basilica. At that time, he was the youngest bishop in the United States. As an auxiliary bishop, Fabre helped manage the archdiocese. He also became the pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish in New Orleans.
In October 2009, Fabre met with people who had been harmed in Catholic homes many years ago. He listened to their stories and apologized for the difficult experiences they had.
Leading in Houma-Thibodaux
On September 23, 2013, Pope Francis appointed Fabre as the bishop of Houma-Thibodaux. He officially began his new role on October 30, 2013. The ceremony was held at the Cathedral of St. Francis de Sales in Thibodaux, Louisiana.
On May 4, 2018, Fabre was chosen to lead a special committee. This committee, part of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, works against racism. On November 6, 2018, Bishop Fabre released a special letter. It was called "Open Wide our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love." This letter talked about racism in the United States and how Catholics should respond to it.
Becoming Archbishop of Louisville
On February 8, 2022, Pope Francis named Fabre as the archbishop of Louisville. He was officially installed on March 30, 2022.
Family and Connections
Shelton Fabre has a cousin who is also a Catholic bishop. His cousin is Bishop John Huston Ricard. Bishop Ricard is the leader of the Josephites. Both Fabre and Ricard are from New Roads, Louisiana.
