Early Life and Moving to Maine
Shepard Cary was born in a town called New Salem, Massachusetts, in 1805. When he was 17 years old, in 1822, he moved with his family to Houlton, Maine. He went to the local schools, which were called "common schools" back then.
Business and Work
After school, Shepard Cary became involved in several businesses. He worked a lot with lumber, which means cutting down trees and processing wood. This was a very big business in Maine at the time. He also worked in agriculture (farming) and mercantile pursuits (buying and selling goods, like running a store).
A Career in Politics
Shepard Cary was very active in politics in Maine. He served many times in the Maine House of Representatives, which is like the state's main law-making group. He was a member in 1832, 1833, from 1839 to 1842, in 1848, 1849, and again in 1862.
He also served in the Maine State Senate, another important part of the state government. He was a senator in 1843 and from 1850 to 1853.
Serving in the U.S. Congress
Shepard Cary was a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected to the Twenty-eighth Congress, which is a way of numbering the sessions of the U.S. Congress. He started his job as a U.S. Representative on May 10, 1844, and served until March 3, 1845.
Later, in 1854, he ran for governor of Maine as a candidate for the Liberty Party.
Later Life and Death
Shepard Cary passed away in Houlton, Maine, on August 9, 1866. He was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Houlton.
