Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (SBMC) is a public medical school in Bangladesh. It was started in 1968. The college is located in the city of Barisal. It is connected to the University of Dhaka.
SBMC helps students become doctors. They earn a special degree called MBBS. The college also offers training and research at its large 1,000-bed hospital. Doctors who graduated from SBMC after October 1984 can even apply to work in the United Kingdom. The college campus is huge, covering about 81 acres. It has student dorms, a nursing school, and homes for teachers.

History of SBMC
Construction for the college began on November 6, 1964. At first, it was known as Barisal Medical College. Students started attending classes in 1968.
The college was renamed in 1977. It was given its current name to honor A. K. Fazlul Huq. He was a former prime minister from Barisal. People often called him "Sher-e-Bangla," which means "The Tiger of Bengal."
Exploring the Campus
The campus of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College is very spacious. The main college building has four lecture halls with multimedia equipment. It also has a library and reading rooms for students and doctors. There is even a cyber cafe.
The campus also has a large 1,000-bed hospital. This hospital includes special units like:
- A 30-bed unit for burn and plastic surgery.
- A 10-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
- A new COVID unit with 150 beds and 18 ICU beds.
- A DOTS corner for specific health needs.
- A 15-bed Cardiac Care Unit (CCU).
- A One Stop Crisis Center.
- An Institute of Nuclear Medicine And Allied Sciences.
On campus, you can also find a Shaheed Minar, which is a monument. There is also a Mukta Mancha (open stage) and a Golden Jubilee Memoir.
Student Housing
There are several places for students to live on campus. There are three dorms for male students. Female students also have three dorms. Both male and female intern doctors have their own separate dorms.
College Leadership
The main leader of the college is called the Principal. There is also a vice principal. Many professors, associate professors, and assistant professors teach at the college. There are also lecturers, medical officers, and other staff members who help run the college.
Yearly Events and Celebrations
Every year, students and different groups at SBMC organize many cultural and religious events. Each group of students celebrates their fifth year at the college.
Students also celebrate important national days of Bangladesh. These include:
- December 16, which is Victory Day.
- February 21, which is International Mother Language Day.
- March 26, which is Independence Day.
- August 15, which is National Mourning Day.
Besides these, students celebrate Islamic festivals like Eid ul Fitr, Eid-ul-Azha, and Eid E Miladunnabi.
Hindu students at the college celebrate Saraswati puja every year. For this celebration, Hindu students form a special group called 'Puja Udjapon Porishod'. Teachers and older students help supervise this group. On the day of Saraswati puja, the college is decorated beautifully. After the puja, the 'Puja Udjapon Porishod' organizes a big cultural night. This is a major tradition at the college. Students from SBMC perform at this event. Sometimes, famous singers and bands are invited to perform too.
Students also celebrate 'Dipaboli or Diwali', which is the festival of lights. On this night, the campus is decorated with many candles and oil lamps. Many people from different parts of Barisal visit the campus to enjoy the beautiful lights.
