Sher-e-Bangla Medical College, often called SBMC, is a big public medical school in Bangladesh. It was started in 1968 and is located in the city of Barisal. This college is part of the University of Dhaka.
SBMC helps students earn an MBBS degree, which is a special qualification for doctors. It also offers training and research at its large 1,000-bed hospital. The college campus is huge, covering about 81.5 acres. You can find student dorms, a nursing school, and homes for teachers and staff right on campus.

College History
Work on the college began on November 6, 1964. Back then, it was known as Barisal Medical College. It welcomed its first students in 1968.
Later, in 1977, the college was renamed to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College. This new name honored a former prime minister named A. K. Fazlul Huq. He was from Barisal and was often called "Sher-e-Bangla," which means "The Tiger of Bengal."
Campus Life
The college campus is very large and has many important buildings. The main college building has four modern lecture halls with multimedia tools. It also has a big library and special rooms for students and doctors to read and study. There's even a cyber cafe for internet access.
The campus is also home to a 1,000-bed hospital. This hospital has special units like a 30-bed burn and plastic surgery unit and a 10-bed ICU (Intensive Care Unit). There's also a new COVID unit with 150 beds and 18 ICU beds. Other important facilities include a DOTS corner, a 15-bed CCU (Cardiac Care Unit), and an Institute of Nuclear Medicine.
You can also find a "Shaheed Minar" (a monument to martyrs), a "Mukta Mancha" (open stage), and a "Golden Jubilee Memoir" on campus.
Student Housing
SBMC has several hostels, which are like dorms, for its students. There are three hostels for male students and three for female students. Doctors who are doing their internship also have their own separate hostels.
College Leadership
The main leader of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College is called the Principal. There is also a Vice Principal who helps run the college. The college has many teachers, including professors, associate professors, and assistant professors. There are also lecturers, medical officers, and a large team of support staff who help keep everything running smoothly.
Yearly Events and Celebrations
Every year, students and different groups at SBMC organize many fun cultural and religious events. Each group of students celebrates their fifth year at the college with a special program.
Students also celebrate important national days for Bangladesh. These include December 16 (Victory Day), February 21 (International Mother Language Day), and March 26 (Independence day of Bangladesh). They also remember August 15, which is a national mourning day.
Religious Festivals
The college community celebrates various Islamic festivals like Eid ul Fitr, Eid-ul-Azha, and Eid E Miladunnabi.
Hindu students at the college also celebrate Saraswati puja every year. For this special event, they form a group called 'Puja Udjapon Porishod'. They decorate the college beautifully for the puja. After the religious ceremony, the students organize a big cultural night. Students from SBMC perform, and sometimes famous singers or bands are invited to entertain everyone.
Students also celebrate 'Dipaboli or Diwali', which is known as the festival of lights. On this night, the campus is decorated with many candles and oil lamps. Many people from different parts of Barisal visit the college to enjoy the beautiful lights.
