Sherrick's Early Life and Music Journey
Sherrick was born Lamotte Smith in Sacramento, California, in 1957. He loved music from a young age and became a talented singer.
Starting with Motown
Sherrick got his start in music thanks to Raynoma Gordy Singleton. She was once married to Berry Gordy, who founded the famous Motown record label. Sherrick became the lead singer of a Motown group called Kagny. This group recorded a song for the 1985 movie The Last Dragon.
Reaching Success with Warner Bros.
In 1987, Sherrick signed with Warner Bros. Records. He worked with Michael Stokes to produce his first album, which was simply called Sherrick. This album included his most famous song, "Just Call."
"Just Call" and Other Hits
"Just Call" was a big success, reaching number 8 on the US Billboard R&B music chart. He also released his own version of an older song called "Baby I'm for Real," which reached number 53 on the same chart. In the United Kingdom, "Just Call" reached number 23 on the UK Singles Chart, and another song, "Let's Be Lovers Tonight," reached number 63. His album Sherrick also did well in the UK, reaching number 27 on the UK Albums Chart in the same year.
After his first album, Sherrick started working on a second one. However, this album was never finished, and he stopped appearing in public around 1988.
Later Life and Passing
In 1999, Sherrick announced that he was working on new music and planning a comeback. Sadly, his plans ended when he passed away in Los Angeles, California, on January 22, 1999. He was 41 years old. Sherrick was survived by his wife, Lynne Conner-Smith, and his three children, Kiriandra, Paris, and Chance Smith.
