Sherry Li facts for kids
Xiaoye Sherry Li is a super smart scientist who works with computers. She is a researcher at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, which is a big science lab in the United States. There, she helps create special computer programs.
One of her main jobs is leading the team that works on something called the SuperLU package. This is a powerful computer program that helps solve very complicated math problems quickly. These problems are like giant puzzles with many numbers, and SuperLU helps computers figure them out. She also leads a team called the Scalable Solvers Group at the lab.
About Her Studies
Xiaoye Sherry Li started her journey in China. She went to Tsinghua University and finished her first degree in computer science in 1986.
After that, she moved to the United States to continue her studies. She earned a master's degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1990. Then, she went to the University of California, Berkeley and got her Ph.D. in computer science in 1996. Her Ph.D. project was about making computers solve big math problems even faster.
Awards and Honors
Because of her amazing work, Xiaoye Sherry Li has received special recognition. In 2016, she was chosen as a SIAM Fellow. This is a big honor given to scientists who have made important discoveries in math and computer science. She was recognized for creating fast and powerful computer methods that help solve huge science and engineering problems.
She also won an award in 2022. She, along with two other scientists, Piyush Sao and Richard Vuduc, received the SIAM Activity Group on Supercomputing Best Paper Prize. This award was for their excellent work in supercomputing.
