The Story of Shiloh

Shiloh was started way back in 1834 by a person named Stephen F. Box. Imagine a small community beginning to grow in Texas almost 200 years ago!

Early Days of Shiloh

During the 1840s, Shiloh became a special place for many people. Big church gatherings, called religious revivals, were held there. People from the city of Houston would even travel and camp in Shiloh to attend these events. It must have been a lively place during those times!

In the 1850s, the community built a local school. This shows that families were settling down and wanted their children to learn. The school was an important part of daily life in Shiloh.

Shiloh During the Civil War

When the American Civil War began, the school in Shiloh took on a new role. It became a "draft post." This means it was a place where men were signed up to join the army and fight in the war. The Civil War was a very difficult time for everyone in the country, and Shiloh was part of that history.

What Happened Next?

After the Civil War ended, the town of Shiloh slowly started to decline. Fewer people lived there, and it became much quieter. By the 1930s, many years later, Shiloh only had a church and a few houses scattered around.

Even in the 1960s, the church was still standing, and it is still there today! Only a few scattered houses remained. In 1973, a special historical marker was placed in Shiloh. This marker helps people remember the town's past and its importance. Today, the old Methodist church is the main building that remains, standing as a reminder of the community that once thrived there.
