History of Shiloh
The area where Shiloh is now was once known as "Three Springs." This name came from its natural springs. In April 1807, a special 11-day religious meeting was held here. This was the first such meeting in St. Clair County. It might have been the second in the entire Illinois Country. At that time, Illinois was part of the Indiana Territory.
The meeting was organized by Reverend William McKendree. He was an important leader in the Methodist Episcopal Church. This event led to the building of the log Shiloh Meeting House soon after. It was the first Methodist church in the county. It was also the second in the Illinois Country.
This meeting house grew into the longest-running United Methodist church in Illinois. The village and township that grew around it took its name from this church. Three members of this church were important in state government. They worked to prevent slavery from becoming common in Illinois.
