Shipoke (say "SHY-poke") is a small neighborhood in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It is located near the Susquehanna River. You can find Shipoke south of I-83 and west of Second Street. It is also north of Washington Street. Shipoke is one of the smaller neighborhoods in Harrisburg.
Shipoke's History
Shipoke was one of the first places in the area where Europeans settled. This happened around 1710. It started as a small trading post. The famous Harris Ferry and Tavern was originally here. This ferry gave Harrisburg its name.
Flooding Challenges
Shipoke is located in a flood plain. This means it is a low area near a river. Because of this, big storms often cause serious flooding. The neighborhood has faced many floods over the years.
A very big flood happened in 1972. This was caused by Hurricane Agnes. Many beautiful Victorian houses were damaged. People left their homes after the flood. Developers then bought these houses for very little money.
Pancake Row and Restoration
There is a special part of Shipoke called "Pancake Row." These are historic houses built in 1888. They are along Conoy Street. Jacob Pancake built them using wood from his company.
In 1996, an electrical fire destroyed most of these houses. This fire was caused by an ice flood. But the city worked together to rebuild and restore them.
Recent Floods and Today
More recently, Shipoke faced floods from Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Tropical Storm Lee also caused damage in 2011.
After many years of hard work, Shipoke is now a beautiful place. It is known for its amazing views of the river. Many people enjoy living there. Riverfront Park is nearby. Fun festivals are held there every year.
