Shipshewana is well-known for being home to the Menno-Hof Amish & Mennonite Museum. This museum teaches visitors about the history and culture of the Amish and Mennonite people.

Shipshewana got its name from a local Potawatomi Native American. The town's post office first opened in 1889.
