The Shipt Tower is a very tall office building located in Birmingham, Alabama. It has 34 floors and stands 454 feet (about 138 meters) high. This makes it one of the most noticeable buildings in the city!
This building has had a few different names over the years. When it was built in 1986, it was called the SouthTrust Tower. This was because it was the main office for a company called SouthTrust Corporation.
Later, in 2005, SouthTrust joined with another company called Wachovia. So, the building's name changed to the Wachovia Tower. Then, in 2010, Wachovia was bought by Wells Fargo, and the building became the Wells Fargo Tower. You could see a new Wells Fargo logo on top!
In 2019, a local company called Shipt announced it would move its main offices into the tower. Shipt is a company that delivers groceries and other items. On May 23, 2020, the building was officially renamed the Shipt Tower, and its new sign was placed at the top.
Building History and Design
The Shipt Tower was built by a company called Johnston-Rast & Hays. Two groups of architects worked together to design it: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Giattina, Fisher & Aycock. The company that actually built the tower was Brice Building Company.
When it was finished in 1986, the Shipt Tower was the tallest building in all of Alabama! It was taller than the RSA–BankTrust Building in Mobile. It held this record for many years. However, in 2006, another building in Mobile, the RSA Battle House Tower, became even taller.
Today, many different businesses have offices in the Shipt Tower. A large law firm called Burr & Forman is one of the biggest tenants. Wells Fargo still has a regional office there, and other companies like Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz and Deloitte also have offices in the building.
