Shirley Dorismond is a Canadian politician who works in the National Assembly of Quebec. She used to be a nurse and a leader in a big union for healthcare workers. She represents the area called Marie-Victorin in Quebec. She is a member of a political group called the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ).
Who is Shirley Dorismond?
Shirley Dorismond is a person who helps make decisions for the province of Quebec. She is a "Member of the National Assembly," often called an MNA. This means she was chosen by people in her area, Marie-Victorin, to speak for them in the government.
Her Background and Work
Before becoming a politician, Shirley Dorismond worked as a nurse. Nurses are very important healthcare workers who help people who are sick or injured. She also held a big job as a vice-president for a group called the Fédération interprofessionnelle de la santé du Québec (FIQ).
This group is a union. A union is like a team that helps workers. The FIQ union helps almost 75,000 nurses, nursing assistants, and other healthcare professionals in Quebec. Her work with the union meant she helped make sure healthcare workers were treated fairly and had good working conditions.
Becoming a Politician
Shirley Dorismond became an MNA in a special election held on April 11, 2022. This type of election is called a "by-election." It happens when a politician leaves their job before their term is over. The previous MNA for Marie-Victorin, Catherine Fournier, had resigned.
Shirley Dorismond won this election as a member of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) party. This was a big deal because the Marie-Victorin area had almost always voted for another party, the Parti Québécois (PQ), since 1980. Shirley Dorismond was the first CAQ member to win in Marie-Victorin.
