A Shirley Temple is a fun, non-alcoholic drink. It's often served to kids when adults are having cocktails. This sweet drink is usually made with ginger ale, a splash of grenadine, and a bright red maraschino cherry on top.
Sometimes, people make Shirley Temples with other ingredients. They might use lemon-lime soda or lemonade. Some recipes even add orange juice. It's a popular choice, just like the Roy Rogers or Arnold Palmer drinks, which are also non-alcoholic.
How the Shirley Temple Drink Started
The Shirley Temple drink might have been created for a famous child actress named Shirley Temple. One story says a bartender at Chasen's, a restaurant in West Hollywood, California, made it for her.
However, other places also claim they invented the drink. Shirley Temple herself wasn't a big fan of the drink named after her. In an interview in 1986, she called it "saccharine sweet" and "icky." She said the Brown Derby Restaurant in Hollywood probably created it in the mid-1930s. She also mentioned that people all over the world served it to her, thinking it was funny, but she actually "hated them" because they were "too sweet!"
In 1988, Shirley Temple even took legal action. She wanted to stop a company from selling a bottled soda drink using her name.
