Shive is a small, unincorporated community in central Hamilton County, Texas. It's located in the United States, right along Farm to Market Road 221. Being "unincorporated" means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government.
The Story of Shive
Shive was settled in the 1870s by a group of people, including Lewis Paullin. The community got its name from a man named Robert Shive.
In 1884, a post office opened inside a store. Robert and James W. Shive ran this store. Robert Shive was chosen to be the first postmaster, which is the person in charge of a post office.
By 1908, Shive had grown to include four stores. A cotton gin also operated there during that time. A cotton gin is a machine that quickly separates cotton fibers from their seeds.
In 1910, about 50 people lived in Shive. The post office eventually closed in 1936. By 1940, the number of residents had increased slightly to 64. From 1980 to 2000, Shive had about 61 residents.
Learning in Shive
Shive is part of the Hamilton Independent School District. This means students in Shive attend schools within this district.
The community received its very first school in 1883. It was called the Union Hill School.
