Shmuel Auerbach (born September 21, 1931 – died February 24, 2018) was an important Haredi rabbi in Jerusalem. Haredi Jews are a group of very religious Jewish people. Rabbi Auerbach was a leader for many Haredi Jews who held strong beliefs. His supporters created a group called the Jerusalem Faction.
This group became well-known in 2013. That year, the Israeli government wanted to have more Haredi men join the army. The Jerusalem Faction disagreed with this. They organized protests against the idea of Haredi men joining the military.
About Shmuel Auerbach
Shmuel Auerbach was the oldest son of Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach. His mother was Chaya Rivka Ruchamkin. He was born in a neighborhood in Jerusalem called Sha'arei Hesed. His father was also born there.
Shmuel Auerbach married Rachel Paksher. She passed away in 1990. They did not have any children. He wrote a special religious book called Ohel Rachel. He named this book to remember his wife. He lived in the Sha'arei Hesed area of Jerusalem.
Rabbinic Leadership Roles
Rabbi Auerbach held several important positions. He was the rosh yeshiva (head of a religious school) of Yeshivas Maalot HaTorah. He was also the Nasi (president) of Yeshivas Midrash Shmuel. Another school he led was Yeshivas Toras Simcha. All these schools are in Jerusalem.
For a short time, he also worked as a rosh yeshiva at Yeshivas Itri in Jerusalem. He was the head of a political group called the Bnei Torah party. People often called this party "Etz." Rabbi Auerbach was the one who started this group.
