Sholto Douglas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sholto Douglas is a legendary figure from ancient Scotland. He is believed to be the first ancestor of Clan Douglas, a very important and strong family in Scottish history.

The name "Douglas" comes from a story about a brave warrior. Long ago, around the year 767, there was a big battle in Scotland. King Solvathius, the true king, was fighting against a man named Donald Bane, who wanted to be king instead. Donald Bane was almost winning the fight.

Suddenly, a brave knight jumped into the battle to help King Solvathius. This knight fought so well that he changed the whole battle, and the king won! After the fight, the king asked who this amazing knight was. Someone shouted, "Sholto du glasse!" This phrase meant "Behold the black man!" because the knight was said to have dark hair or skin. From this brave act, the name Douglas was born.

The Douglas Family in Europe

The story of Sholto Douglas also includes his youngest son, Marius Douglas. According to the legends, Marius Douglas was a leader of soldiers sent by the mythical Scottish king Achaius. These soldiers went to help Charlemagne, a famous emperor, in his wars against Desiderius, the King of the Lombards in Italy.

Marius Douglas is said to have settled in a city called Piacenza in Italy. His family, known as the Marescotti family [it], became very powerful there. They were important leaders in the city and were known for being part of the Guelf group, which supported the Pope in political fights.
