What is ShopHQ?
ShopHQ first started on March 12, 1991, and was called ValueVision back then. It's a shopping channel, similar to others like HSN and QVC. ShopHQ has changed its name a few times over the years, but it came back to the name ShopHQ in 2019.
Besides ShopHQ, its parent company, iMedia Brands, also runs other channels. These include ShopHQ Health, which sells products for health and wellness, and the Bulldog Shopping Network, which focuses on products for men. Both ShopHQ and iMedia Brands are based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. In August 2023, a company called IV Media bought them.
ShopHQ's Journey Through the Years
How ShopHQ Started and Changed Names
ValueVision Media (VVM) was founded in June 1990. About ten years later, in 2000, a part of the company was sold to NBC. When ValueVision changed its name to ShopNBC in November 2000, it even used the famous NBC peacock in its new logo!
In 2010, there was talk that NBC might sell its share in ValueVision Media. This was partly because NBCUniversal was planning to join with Comcast. Even though they announced they would sell their share, NBCU decided to keep their investment in the company in June of that year.
In 2013, ValueVision Media bought back NBCUniversal's financial interest. After this, the network announced it would change its name to ShopHQ. In 2014, a show called Mark Cuban's American Dream aired on the network. This was part of a plan to feature more famous people as hosts.
Becoming Evine
On February 13, 2015, the ShopHQ network changed its name again to EVINE Live. This happened after ValueVision Media bought an e-commerce company that owned the EVINE name. They wanted to create a new image and move away from their old names like ValueVision and ShopNBC.
The network brought in popular hosts, like Kathy Levine from QVC. They also featured products from many reality TV stars and celebrities. Some of these included Lisa Vanderpump, Paula Deen, and Donny Osmond. You could also buy products on their website, Evine.com.
In the same year, EVINE Live started broadcasting in high definition (HD) at 1080i. For a while, it just showed an upscaled standard definition picture. But by September 2017, the network fully upgraded to true HD. In July 2016, they dropped 'Live' from their on-air name, becoming simply EVINE.
Returning to ShopHQ
On July 17, 2019, Evine Live Inc. changed its company name to iMedia Brands Inc. The television network then returned to the ShopHQ name on August 21. The company said they changed back because market research showed people were confusing the "E" name with entertainment news brands like E!.
iMedia Brands also announced plans to launch a Spanish-speaking shopping channel called LaVenta Shopping Network. They also planned to launch the male-focused Bulldog Shopping Network.
The Bulldog Shopping Network started in spring 2020, but its focus quickly changed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A new channel focused on health and wellness products, called ShopHQ Health, launched within weeks. It became the main concept for that network space and officially branded as ShopHQ Health on September 1.
Bulldog Shopping Network tried to launch again in June 2021. However, it was stopped on most TV providers by the end of December that year. Some of ShopHQ Health's cable channels also stopped in May 2022. Both ShopHQ Health and Bulldog Shopping Network still stream online and are available on some over-the-air TV channels.
New Ownership for ShopHQ
After facing financial challenges in June 2023, ShopHQ's parent company, iMedia Brands, announced it would sell its assets. On July 10, they said they would sell to RNN Media Group. This deal was set to close in August.
