The short-footed frog is a special type of frog that lives in northern Australia. You can find it mostly in Queensland. People also call it the savannah water-holding frog or blotched water-holding frog. Its scientific name is Ranoidea brevipes.

What it looks like

This frog is not very big. It usually grows to be about 3.0 to 6.0 centimeters long. That's about the size of your thumb!

Its feet might or might not have webbing between the toes. The short-footed frog often has cool spots or stripes on its back. These patterns help it blend in with its surroundings.

Where it lives and what it does

The short-footed frog likes to live in open areas. You can find it in grasslands and forests where the trees are not too close together. It prefers places where it can move around easily.

When it's rainy, this frog comes out to look for food. It might eat insects or other small creatures. But when the weather gets dry, the short-footed frog is very clever. It digs a burrow deep underground. It stays in this burrow to keep cool and safe until the rain comes back.

Life cycle

The tadpoles of the short-footed frog grow up quickly. They change from tiny tadpoles swimming in water into full-grown frogs in a short amount of time. This helps them survive in places where water might not last long.
