Shortstop facts for kids
A shortstop (often called SS) is a player in baseball. This player stands in the infield, between the second base and third base. The shortstop position is one of the most important and exciting spots on the field!
What Does a Shortstop Do?
The shortstop has a very busy job. More baseballs are hit towards the shortstop than any other player. This is because most batters are right-handed. Right-handed batters often hit the ball slightly to their left, which is where the shortstop plays.
Skills of a Shortstop
A great shortstop needs many skills. They must be very quick and agile. This helps them move fast to catch balls and make plays. For example, they often help with a double play, like the "4-6-3" play. This is when they catch a ball, throw to second base, and then the second baseman throws to first base, getting two outs at once!
Shortstops also need a very strong arm. They often catch balls hit hard to the left side of the infield. From there, they need to throw the ball all the way to first base very quickly. This helps them get the batter out before they can reach the base safely.
Famous Shortstops
Many amazing players have played shortstop. These players are often known for their incredible fielding skills. They make plays that seem impossible!
