How Shottsville Got Its Name
Shottsville is named after a person named Lovid McCindry Shotts. He moved to this area in 1839. Later, in 1874, he became the very first postmaster for the community. A postmaster is the person in charge of a local post office. The post office in Shottsville operated from 1874 until 1905.
Before it was called Shottsville, people in the area knew it as "Stone Town." This was because many families living there had the last name Stone.
A Big Storm Hits
On April 27, 2011, Shottsville was affected by a very strong tornado. This tornado was part of a larger storm system. It was known as the Smithville, Mississippi EF5 tornado. An EF5 tornado is the strongest kind of tornado.
When the tornado crossed into Alabama, it caused significant damage in Shottsville. The damage was rated as EF3. This means the winds were very powerful, causing serious harm to buildings and trees in the community.
