Shozo Awazu (粟津 正蔵, Awazu Shōzō, April 18, 1923 – March 17, 2016) was a famous Japanese judo master. He was born on April 18, 1923, and passed away on March 17, 2016. He reached a very high level in judo, called 9th Dan, at the Kōdōkan school. Awazu Sensei helped judo grow a lot in France.

Life and Judo Journey
Early Life and Moving to France
Shozo Awazu was born in Kyoto, Japan, in 1923. He became a skilled judoka in his home country. In 1950, he moved to France. There, he worked with another judo master, Mikinosuke Kawaishi. Together, they helped introduce and spread judo across France.
Teaching and Influence
Awazu Sensei taught many students. Two of his most famous students were Henri Courtine and Bernard Pariset. From 1953 until 2014, he was a judo professor. He taught at the Racing Club de France in Paris for many years.
Judo Expertise
Shozo Awazu was known as one of the best experts in several judo areas. He was especially good at ne waza, which means grappling techniques. These are moves done on the ground. He also excelled at kata, which are set forms of movements. Another skill he mastered was tandoku-renshu, which means practicing judo moves alone.
