Shrewsbury Flower Show facts for kids
The Shrewsbury Flower Show is a super fun event that happens every year in mid-August. It takes place over two days, usually a Friday and Saturday, at a beautiful park called The Quarry in Shrewsbury, England. Shrewsbury is the main town in Shropshire. The Shropshire Horticultural Society organizes this amazing show.
This show is very special! In 2005, it was even listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the "longest-running flower show" in the whole world. That's a lot of history!
The Show's History
The Shrewsbury Flower Show took a break during the Second World War. But it came back strong in 1946! A famous gardener named Percy Thrower helped a lot. He was Shrewsbury's Parks Superintendent from 1946 until 1975. He also advised the Shropshire Horticultural Society and later became its chairman.
In 1970, the show lost a lot of money because of bad weather. But Percy Thrower and Doug Whittingham stepped in to help. They promised to cover any losses so the show could continue. Luckily, the weather was better in 1971, and the show made a profit! This helped it keep going for many more years.
What You Can See and Do
The Shrewsbury Flower Show is huge! It covers about 29 acres (which is about 117,000 square meters) of The Quarry park. There are many large tents, called marquees, where you can explore.
Some of the cool things you can see and do include:
- Amazing displays of flowers, fruits, and vegetables.
- Stalls selling arts and crafts.
- Performances by three military bands.
- Exciting show jumping competitions.
- Lots of different music and entertainment.
- A big firework display every evening!
About 60,000 people usually visit the show over the two days. It's a very popular event! Famous chefs like James Martin and 'The Hairy Bikers' often come to the show. They give cooking demonstrations for everyone to watch.
