Shuttle facts for kids
A shuttle is a special tool used in weaving. It helps to carry the weft yarn (the yarn that goes across) through the other threads called the warp yarn (the yarn that goes up and down). Think of it like a needle that carries thread, but for making fabric!

What is a Weaving Shuttle?
Shuttles are designed to hold the weft yarn neatly. This makes it easy to pass the yarn back and forth. When fabric is made, the shuttle moves through a space called the "shed." The shed is a gap created between the warp threads. This movement weaves the weft yarn into the warp.
Types of Shuttles
The simplest shuttles are called "stick shuttles." They are flat, narrow pieces of wood. They have small cuts or notches at their ends. These notches hold the weft yarn.
More advanced shuttles use bobbins or pirns. These are small spools that hold a lot of yarn. The bobbin fits inside the shuttle. This allows the weaver to use more yarn without stopping.
What are Shuttles Made From?
Shuttles are often made from the wood of the Flowering Dogwood tree. This wood is very hard and strong. It resists splintering, which means it won't break into small sharp pieces. It can also be polished to be very smooth. A smooth shuttle moves easily through the warp threads.
The Flying Shuttle
For a long time, weavers had to pass shuttles back and forth by hand. This was slow work. It also meant that wide cloth was hard to make.
In 1733, a clever inventor named John Kay changed weaving forever. He invented a special loom that used a "flying shuttle." This new shuttle could be thrown through the warp threads. It moved much faster than a hand-passed shuttle.
How the Flying Shuttle Changed Weaving
The flying shuttle made it possible to weave much wider cloth. It also made weaving much quicker. This invention was a big step forward. It helped make machine looms easier to develop and use. The flying shuttle played a key role in the start of the Industrial Revolution. It showed how new tools could speed up production.
