A Look Back at Sidney's History
People first started settling in the area that is now Sidney around 1870. The very first settlers were William Yarbrough and JA Wright. The community was also known by other names, like Jimmie's Creek, named after a nearby stream, and Round Mountain.
Sidney got its current name from the son of John Stapp. John Stapp was the postmaster when the community's post office opened in 1886. In 1883, Tom Davis opened the first store in Sidney. By 1940, the community had grown to include four stores and three churches. Around that time, about 200 people lived in Sidney.
The population stayed fairly steady for a while. It was 196 people in 2000. However, the community lost one of its stores in 1980. By 2010, the number of people living in Sidney had gone down to 148.
