Sidney Alderman Blackmer (born July 13, 1895 – died October 6, 1973) was a famous American actor. He worked in both Broadway plays and movies for many years, from 1914 to 1971. He was known for playing important supporting characters in many films.

About Sidney Blackmer

Early Life and Start in Acting

Sidney Blackmer was born and grew up in Salisbury, North Carolina. His parents were Clara Deroulhac and Walter Steele Blackmer. He first tried working in insurance and financial advice, but he soon changed his mind.

One day, while working on a building site, he saw a movie being filmed. It was a Pearl White movie series. This experience made him decide right away that he wanted to be an actor. He later studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His first movie role was in a very popular film series called The Perils of Pauline in 1914.

A Long Acting Career

In 1929, Sidney Blackmer returned to making movies. He became a major character actor, appearing in more than 120 films!

He also had a very successful career on Broadway. In 1950, he won a special award called the Tony Award for Best Actor. He won it for his role in the play Come Back, Little Sheba, where he starred with actress Shirley Booth.

One of his most famous movie roles was in the 1968 film Rosemary's Baby. He played a tricky old neighbor named Roman Castevet. This movie, starring Mia Farrow, won an Academy Award.

Helping Others

Sidney Blackmer was also a kind person who cared about helping others. He was the national vice president of the United States Muscular Dystrophy Association. This group helps people with muscle diseases.

He also helped start the North Carolina School of the Arts. In 1972, he received the North Carolina Award in the Fine Arts category. This is the highest award a civilian can get in North Carolina. Sidney Blackmer passed away in 1973 and was buried in his hometown of Salisbury, North Carolina.
