The Siege of Coimbatore was an important event during the Third Anglo-Mysore War. This war was a big conflict in southern India. The siege happened when forces from the Kingdom of Mysore attacked a fort in Coimbatore. This fort was defended by soldiers from the British East India Company and the Kingdom of Travancore.

The siege started in May 1791. The Mysorean forces tried to take the fort by force.

What Happened During the Siege?

The siege began in May 1791. On June 11, the Mysorean soldiers tried to storm the fort. They were pushed back by the defenders. The fort's defenders were led by Lieutenant John Chalmers. After this attack, more Mysorean soldiers arrived. This made their attacking force much larger.

When Did the Fort Surrender?

The soldiers defending the fort fought for many months. But they eventually had to give up. The fort surrendered on November 2, 1791.

What Happened to the Prisoners?

After the surrender, the leader of the Mysorean forces, Tipu Sultan, did not follow the rules of surrender. He kept the officers of the defending army as prisoners. Lieutenant John Chalmers, who led the fort's defense, was also held captive. It is believed that about 100 British soldiers were killed while they were prisoners of the Mysorean forces.
